Toquerville Falls is a set of terraced waterfalls in the desert with pools deep enough to sit in, about five miles up a rough road from the town of Toquerville. Our shop in Apple Valley is under twenty miles away.

It is one of the best destination rides in the area, and it is also the one where the road does most of the talking.

The road is the actual attraction

The first half mile out of town is paved. After that it is dirt, rock and roughly five miles of the kind of surface that makes a dirt bike feel like the right tool rather than an indulgence. There are creek crossings, deep ruts, washboard sections and a stretch near the start that is genuinely rocky.

The posted sign reads "Extremely Rough Road, 4WD Recommended", and it is not being dramatic. Hire cars turn around at this road constantly. On a bike it is a good time; in a low saloon it is a recovery bill.

Do not go when it is wet

This is the part worth reading twice. The road crosses the creek directly and becomes impassable in wet conditions — not just during rain, but for hours or days afterwards. Desert ground does not drain the way you expect. Check the forecast before you commit, and if there has been recent rain, pick a different day and ask us where else to go.

Flash flooding is a genuine hazard in this landscape. If a storm builds while you are out there, leave. Water in a desert drainage arrives faster than seems reasonable.

What it is like at the falls

Travertine terraces, water running over them in steps, and pools at the bottom that people swim in. On a hot Southern Utah afternoon that combination is hard to beat, and it is a much better reward at the end of a ride than another viewpoint.

It is popular in summer, and it shows. Whatever you carry in, carry out — including other people's litter if you have room. Places like this stay open and stay pleasant because the people who love them look after them.

What to bring

More water than the distance suggests, because you will be stopping and standing in the sun. Something dry to change into for the ride home. A way to keep your phone dry if you plan to get in the water — we rent roll-top dry bags on our gear page and they work as well on a bike as they do in the Narrows.

Tell somebody where you are going. Mobile signal out there is not something to rely on.

Which bike

Anything in our fleet will do the road, and all our bikes are registered for off-highway use. The Honda CRF250F is the comfortable choice — enough travel for the rough sections without punishing you on the way. The CRF125F is fine too and is the right pick for a younger or newer rider. The two-strokes will get there quickly but are more work over five miles of rocks.

The electric Sur-Ron handles the road well and is quiet enough not to announce itself to everyone already at the pools, which is worth something. Ask us about range for this route before you take one — it is a real out-and-back and worth planning properly.
