Can I ride a dirt bike in Zion National Park?

No. Off-road riding is not permitted on national park trails, and the main canyon road is shuttle-only for most of the year. The riding is all on public land outside the park — Gooseberry Mesa, Sand Hollow and Warner Valley.

How far is your shop from Zion?

About thirty-five miles from the south entrance at Springdale. We are at 1752 W Plains Dr in Apple Valley, which sits between the park and the trails.

Where is the best riding closest to Zion?

Gooseberry Mesa — technical slickrock on top of a mesa with genuinely spectacular views. It is the closest thing to riding with a Zion outlook.

Can I do a park day and a riding day on one trip?

Yes, and it is what most of our customers do. Hike one day, ride the next. If the park day is the Narrows, we rent the boots, poles and dry bags for that too, often on the same booking.

I have never ridden. Is this a bad idea?

Not at all — most of our customers have not ridden either. Start on a Honda CRF125F or CRF250F at Warner Valley, or take an electric Sur-Ron, which has no clutch and nothing to stall.

Do I need to tow the bikes?

Yes, for all three riding areas. We rent a dirt bike trailer and only keep two, so reserve it at the same time as the bikes.

What is the best time of year?

Spring and autumn, which are also the busiest. Summer works if you start at first light and finish by late morning. Winter is cold, empty and better than people expect.

Do you rent Zion Narrows hiking gear as well?

Yes — water hiking boots in sizes 7 to 14, extendable trekking poles, dry bags and sun hats. It goes on the same reservation as a bike if you want both.

Riding a Dirt Bike Near Zion National Park

The honest version: where you can ride, where you cannot, and how close it all is.

Let us deal with the important part first, because a lot of people book a trip without knowing it. You cannot ride a dirt bike inside Zion National Park. Off-road riding is not permitted on national park trails, and the main canyon road is shuttle-only for most of the year. Anyone who implies otherwise is either confused or selling you something they should not.

The good news is that it barely matters. The public land immediately outside the park is where the riding actually is, and it is genuinely excellent. Our shop is at 1752 W Plains Dr in Apple Valley, about thirty-five miles from the south entrance at Springdale, which puts you between the park and the trails.

Where you can ride

Gooseberry Mesa is the closest thing to riding with a Zion view — and the closest good riding to our shop, since Apple Valley is the nearest town to it. A network of jeep roads crosses the mesa, with rim routes running out to viewpoints that look straight at Zion sandstone. It is the one we recommend if the park is what drew you here. The marked singletrack up there is for mountain bikes; the jeep roads and two-track are open to us.

Sand Hollow is the big one — soft dunes, grippy slickrock and miles of open red sand in a single state park. It suits a complete beginner and a fast rider on the same day, which is why most of our bikes end up there.

Warner Valley is the quiet option: wide, forgiving desert with room to make mistakes unobserved. It is where we send genuinely new riders.

Combining a park day with a ride day

This is what most of our customers actually do. Hike in the park one day, ride the next. The two do not compete for the same hours, and the drive between them is short.

If the park day is the Narrows, we rent the gear for that too — water hiking boots in sizes 7 to 14, trekking poles and dry bags. Plenty of people collect bikes and Narrows gear on the same booking and do both in one long weekend.

Which bike, if you have never ridden

Most people who book with us have not. Start on a Honda CRF125F or CRF250F: smooth, predictable four-strokes that do not punish a mistake. If you would rather skip gears entirely, the electric Sur-Ron Light Bee X has no clutch and nothing to stall, and it is quiet enough not to spoil anyone elses day out.
